  1. Gary Kuo says:

As a composer, I appreciate Mr. Gaffigan’s statement at the top of this presentation. It’s also worth noting that a significant amount of musical direction an ensemble receives is typically given during rehearsals, where the detailed work is done. Assuming that has taken place, the performance is for the conductor to visually remind and reinforce, in real time, the ideas discussed and practiced earlier.

  2. Eric In SF says:

I don't know, I have a hard time believing world-class musicians somehow can't figure out how to play their instruments or their parts or keep a beat without this guy. I get it, who would lead a band if there was no conductor but he could certainly sit off to the side and everything would work without all the clownery.

  3. Alex MacLean says:

When you say that the left and right hands have a different job, would that translate to a left handed conductor using them the other way? And if so would changing conductors this way cause much confusion for the players or is it easy to adapt?

  4. Sir. SuperThunderGoodGuy MMXVI says:

As a Clarinet and Sax player, in an assemble I rely more on the conductor than my music as the conductor gives cues and keeps tempo. I prefer the baton so it’s easier to see but in Marching Band the drum major who’s the conductor doesn’t use it which is interesting.

Regardless I love this video as I love instrumental music, specifically classical, orchestral, symphony, wind assembles, concert bands, military/marches, marching bands, jazz, big band, etc.

  5. Hein Madsen-leipoldt says:

I own my very own orchestra, I'm a classical composer and I'm the principal conductor and also I'm well organised at conducting the orchestra while playing the pipe organ, I'm the grand owner of my own music Hall, currently closed to public and open to organists who make YouTube videos, my dad was conductor and I promised him I would become a classical composer ,we both are church and concert organists and my hall consists of three organs, 4 manual mechanical pipe organ on the grand gallery, 5 manual pipe organ in the front with two consoles, this organ is the one used with the orchestra and choir, practical design choir pavilion and orchestra platform with a 17 000 pipe pipe organ in the background, on both right and left side is my beloved 5 manual Wurlitzer organ. The main floor can host 5000 souls and the main gallery 1500 and the grand gallery 700 due to the massive size of the mechanical pipe organ. My orchestra is a 180 soul orchestra and they can't perform without me. Due to covid the orchestra will do live performances once this pandemic is 100% over, organ solos still continue, and I've been blessed to say that I never had any problems at conducting my orchestra, this is my life, writing operas, choir and orchestral music, organ solos and church music. M son who was 7 in 2018, conducted the orchestra performing the famous Phantom of the Opera.

  6. Phil Swaim says:

I had a conductor once who believed very much that 99 percent of the job is prior to the concert. Rehearsals let the orchestra know how to play. By the time of the concert, they know already. So you start them with the beat. Cue major changes in tempo. Let the trombones know their time is coming after their 230 measures of resting.

Traffic cop. Youre a traffic cop.

I thought the conductor was just doing the cues and all, I wanted to be one just to dance infront of the orchestra and we'd have such a good time. but sadly, that's inappropriate 🙁
